I have washed the jacket a few times since I got it and it still looks brand new! ![]() By accident one evening at home I spilt some bacon grease on it and it washed up without leaving a stain. After 5 months of use and abuse, it still looks and wears new. I would equate the sizing to a thin fleece. No, it doesn't have a special pocket that it crams in to, but it does compress pretty well. The jacket felt awesome - water repellent on the outside while keeping you at the perfect cozy temperature inside especially in the damp bone-chilling weather. I was grateful to be tent-bound in a synthetic garment at that point - my down poofy would have absorbed the moisture for sure. At one point it rained hard for 36 hours straight and everything we brought was absolutely soaked. The weather was a mix of sun, rain, wind, and damp conditions. I wore the Ascendant as my only insulation layer on a coastal backpacking trip this summer. The jacket rivals my lightest poofy for weight. As someone who counts grams this is a significant difference. Compared to Outdoor Research's other active insulation jacket the Uberlayer at 16.8 oz, the Ascendant feels significantly lighter at 10.9oz. My first impression of this jacket when I picked it up is how light it is. Other features include: adjustable helmet compatible hood, internal thumb loops, zippered chest pocket, two handwarmer pockets, and an elastic drawcord hem. The net result is the ability to stay warm (but not sweaty) and cozy all the time. How does this fabric work? The best analogy I can think of is that the fabric is like a network of thousands of tiny windows that open when you are working hard and close when you are sedentary. The interior is a soft fuzzy Polartec Alpha Direct insulating polyester fleece. The stretchy material moves with you - not against you. ![]() Although not as waterproof as your shell, rain does bead on its surface quite well. The exterior of this jacket is made from Pertex Microlight 20D ripstop nylon that is both water shedding, windblocking, and stretchy. ![]() Can it really replace a breathable fleece layer and lightweight poofy jacket and combine it all into one jacket? To find out, I tested this hoody out over a five month period including a 7 day coastal backpacking trip, a 5 day canoe trip, and several day trips rock climbing and hiking in the summer and fall 2017.Ĭolours:Night/Ultraviolet, Black/Flame, Pewter/Typhoon, Pinot/Raspberry, Sea/Atlantis The Outdoor Research Ascendant Hoody is a brand new do-it-all layer that boasts the ability to adapt to both your active insulation and sedentary needs.

So, the pattern may not have been passed from one of these cultures to the other, but somehow there it is in Mexico, at the Mitla ruins from 900 BCE. The world is still a place where communication between disparate geographies-Central America, Greece, China-is unlikely. In the next leg of the Greek key journey, the pattern shows up in Central America around 900 BCE. The fret pattern has legs (and a hidden time machine). and see the same design snaking its way around a ceramic Chinese plate. The design is so deeply entrenched in China’s history that even now, more than two thousand years later, you can go to an old-school Chinese restaurant in the U.S. The pattern is also revealed centuries later on a scrap of wool trousers dating 800 BCE (the oldest pants in the world). A millennia later, Rolling Thunder motifs are painted on richly decorative Chinese caves from 1038-1227 BCE. Whichever ways the Chinese accented this design, once it shows up in their culture, the pattern never leaves. Rolling Thunder is drawn exactly as the Greeks later drew it (as we know it now), but some Chinese variations sport a few closed ends that make it look a bit like a Chinese language character, or like Chinese lattice designs of the future. The motif is delicately carved into ancient Chinese bronze vessels as old as 2,000 BCE. Here, it is called Rolling Thunder as the lines are said to represent clouds (and are a good omen for crops because clouds bring needed rain). It’s the same arrangement of squared geometric lines, but elegantly carved into Egyptian stonework. Still long before Greece adopted it, it appears on graceful borders in Egyptian tombs from the fourth dynasty (roughly 2600-2500 BCE). We pick up the Meander pattern again centuries later. We don’t know what the ancient Ukraine community called this pattern (if anything), and it’s impossible to trace it directly from the paleolithic period straight to now (because relics have a way of going unpreserved). ![]() Image via Gianni Dagli Orti/Shutterstock and Werner Forman Archive/Shutterstock. There, in 20,000 BCE, on wide ivory bracelets made of mammoth tusk (which look like chic cuffs even today), there were carved designs of this fret pattern. Mammoths roamed the earth, specifically the earth in the Mezin area of Ukraine. After it appeared there, we can trace the motif directly to Rome, then to Europe at large.īut, much longer ago, this pattern arose in some unexpected places. Greek culture used the Meander prolifically in much of their art and architecture for thousands of years. In every culture where the pattern showed up, its creators added their own visual flourish, and imbued their own meaning to it. (The word meander comes from a twisting river in Turkey called the Maender.) Image via Design Pics Inc/Shutterstock and L. But, many Greeks also called the pattern a Meander (as Homer did, in The Iliad) due to its backwards and forwards, decidedly indirect path. The Greeks felt this squarish design looked a lot like an old key. The winding, geometric pattern has at least a dozen names from a dozen (or more) cultures that employed it: rolling thunder, fret, stepped fret, meander, key, running dog, zigzag, labyrinth, jigsaw, and more. While Greek key is a common name for the pattern, it has had aliases from its many incarnations throughout time. Images via Kanunnikova Viktoriia, Martyshova Maria, kavalenkava, and Babich Alexander. For thousands of years, it adorned everything in Greek life-architecture, floor tiles, paintings. If you’re using a wooden frame, start by adding some adhesivearound the edge of one piece of glass. If any pieces of glass are too small or too big, you can use a file or sandpaperto smooth down the edges until they fit perfectly in your frame. Be careful not to cut yourself on any sharp edges! You can do this by holding the scoredglass at each end and gently bending it until it snaps along the score lines. Once you have scored all four sides of your rectangle, it’s time to break the glass along those lines. If they are not, your pane will be uneven and may not fit properly in its frame. It is important to make sure that your cuts are straight and even. Next, use your cutting tool to score a line around the perimeter of your desired pane size on the glass. This will help ensure that your cuts are clean and precise. The first step is to clean your glass surface with the cleaner and cloth. Once you have gathered your materials, you are ready to begin. A frame (this can be made of wood, metal, or plastic) A cutting tool (a glass cutter or a sharp knife) The first step is to gather the materials you will need. Making glass panes is a process that has been around for centuries. Tinted glass can be used in all the same ways as regular glass, but it adds an extra touch of beauty to your creations. The color of the stained clay will determine the color of the tinted glass. Tinted glass is created by adding stained clay to a furnace while smelting sand. ![]() Glass panes can even be combined with stained glass to create beautiful patterns. They can also be used to make walls that let in light but keep out hostile mobs. Panes of glass can be used to create windows or doors for your home. Once the sand has been smelted, it can be placed in a crafting table to create 8 panes of glass. Glass is created by smelting sand in a furnace. It is also possible to tint glass to create different colors. Glass is a clear block that can be used to create windows, walls, or other structures. There are many types of blocks in Minecraft, and one of the most useful is glass. That’s it! Your wooden window is now complete. Make sure that there are no gaps in between any of the pieces – if there are, fill them in with additional planks or slabs until everything is solid.įinally, it’s time to add the glass panes! Place eight panes around the outside edge of the frame – one pane should fit snugly into each space between two vertical posts and two horizontal beams. To complete the frame, place four planks across the top and bottom horizontal logs (these will be the crosspieces). Then, place two more logs vertically next to them (these will be the side pieces). Now that you have all the materials necessary, it’s time to start building your window frame! Start by placing two logs horizontally on top of each other (this will be the top part of the frame). After mining sixteen obsidian blocks, return to your crafting table and combine them with eight sand blocks to create sixteen glass panes. It’s important that the obsidian is placed in the correct pattern on the crafting table, otherwise it won’t turn into glass panes. Once you have your pickaxe, head over to a pool of lava and start mining obsidian blocks. This will be used to mine blocks of obsidian, which is needed for glass panes. Once you have your materials, use your crafting table to create a wooden pickaxe. If you want a larger window, you’ll need more materials. You’ll need at least four logs and eight planks for a basic window. To start, gather some logs and planks from trees. You can also use slabs or blocks of wood, but this will result in a smaller window. The most common way is to use logs and planks to create a frame, then add glass panes to the empty spaces. There are a few different ways that you can make a wooden window in Minecraft. If you need to constantly change the batteries or the keypad won’t work after you make the swap, the opener may have another problem.Īlong with cold batteries, frozen wiring can also cause keypad failure. You may need to replace your batteries more than once over the course of the winter. Instead, contact a professional to assess and repair the issue. This can damage the door or the opener mechanism. Never attempt to force or pry the door opener. When this happens, the door may not budge, whether the keypad works or not. Snow, ice, or sleet can freeze around the door and seal it shut. Along with this type of mechanical issue, snow, ice, or icicles can also trigger the door’s sensors and stop it from closing.īeyond these issues, excessively cold weather can also cause your entire door to freeze. This can make parts stick and prevent it from opening correctly. It’s possible the cold weather has caused the metal in your door’s mechanism to contract. Never attempt to inspect, diagnose, or repair your garage door (or opener) yourself. This requires a professional’s assistance. While a cold or frozen keypad is fairly easy to fix, other issues may require a more complex solution.
